Protect Your Hearing for Life

by Carley Shepherd, Patient Care Coordinator

Our team at Professional Hearing Services is dedicated to better hearing, including hearing conservation.

Noise‑induced hearing loss is one of the most common—and preventable—causes of permanent hearing damage. Rather than avoiding noise completely, focus on managing sound exposure over time.

Smart Sound Strategies

·       Limit sustained exposure to sounds above 85 dB, such as traffic, lawn equipment, or loud music

·       Use hearing protection in noisy settings:

o   Foam earplugs for everyday use

o   Over‑ear protection for yard work or construction

o   Double protection in extremely loud environments

·       Increase distance from sound sources—moving even a few feet away can significantly reduce exposure

Safe Headphone Use

·       Keep volume at 50–60% of maximum

·       Use noise‑canceling headphones to avoid increasing volume in noisy environments

·       Take regular listening breaks to allow your ears time to recover

Did you know? Exposure to sounds above 100 dB—such as concerts or clubs—can cause hearing damage in under 15 minutes.

Hearing Health Matters

·       Schedule a baseline hearing test in adulthood to help monitor changes over time

·       Early detection allows for quicker intervention and better long‑term outcomes

·       Sings of hearing loss include speech that sounds muffled, frequently asking for repetitions, increased volume on the tv and radio
